iMakr's Verdict
The BCN Sigma 17 is a dual extruder 3D printer with independent print heads. This allows the user to print with two materials, two colours or two different size nozzles. With two materials you can print with soluble support material that dissolves in water, or print in a combination of hard and flexible material to make truly functional parts. With two nozzle sizes it is possible to print outlines and fine details with a smaller diameter extruder to maintain accuracy, while printing infill and supports with a larger diameter to increase strength and reduce print time. The Sigma uses 2.85mm filament with dual bowden extuders, meaning the extruder motor is mounted on the body of the machine and pushes the filament to the hotend. This reduces the weight of the extruder carriage, reducing the inertia when the carriage accelerates and therefore the vibrations. The downside of a bowden is the distance between the motor and the extruder make it difficult to print flexible filament, imagine trying to push an elastic band. Flexible filament is still possible at slow speeds, but it is suggested to use a slightly firmer filament such as Cheetah to prevent problems when printing.
