Råmaterialet, der er på fast form (tråd eller filament), smeltes til slutproduktet ved ekstrudering gennem en dyse. I praksis betyder det, at der med FDM / FFF teknologi kan 3D-printes med traditionelle materialer som fx ABS og nylon (PA), nyere materialer, der kræver høj temperatur, som fx PEEK og PEI og mange flere.
